EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters have signed catcher/first baseman Alejandro Segovia, right-handed pitchers Joe Mello and Andrew Moralez, and infielder Lance Montano.
Segovia last played for the Montgomery Biscuits (AA) in the Tampa Bay Rays organization during the 2014 season. With the Biscuits, Segovia batted .224 with 66 hits and 33 RBIs. In seven seasons with affiliated baseball (2008-14), Segovia hit .268 with 87 doubles, 52 home runs and 216 RBIs.
“Alejandro should be a power threat in the middle of our lineup,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said.
The three other signees came from the California Winter League.
Mello was signed after playing for Pittsburg in the Pacific Association last season. With the Mettle, Mello appeared in 23 games and finished with a 2-2 record and 2.86 ERA. He pitched 28.1 innings and struck out 41 batters, walking 24.
Moralez played college baseball nearby at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky. from 2013-16. Last spring, he appeared in nine games and started four of them, finishing the season with a 3-2 record and 4.19 ERA in 34.1 innings of work.
Montano played last spring for the University of Rio Grande (Ohio). In 2016, Montano hit .332 and finished with 52 RBIs, 11 doubles, 1 triple and 5 home runs.
“All three performed well at the California Winter League,” McCauley said. “We are looking for them to compete for jobs during spring training.”
