Patrick McGuff won his third straight start as the Otters won their third straight series
CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Evansville Otters beat the Windy City Thunderbolts 6-2 Thursday in the rubber match of a three-game set at Standard Bank Stadium.
Behind eight strong innings from Patrick McGuff and two, three-run innings, the Otters won their third straight series and improved to 7-5 on the season.
Windy City jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning, when David Oppenheim homered down the right field line to put the Thunderbolts up 1-0.
Windy City then added another run in the third when Oppenheim picked up his second RBI of the game when he grounded out to second to score Darius Day from third.
Evansville took the lead in the fourth with a three-run inning. A sac fly by Manny Cruz brought home Brandon Dulin for the first run for Evansville. Ryan Long followed Cruz with an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game for Evansville. Zach Welz then pushed the Otters in front with an RBI double to left-center.
The Otters added some insurance runs with another three-run inning, this time in the eighth. Jeff Gardner drew a bases-loaded walk which increased the Otters’ lead to two. Travis Harrison then roped a single to center, scoring two runs and giving Evansville a 6-2 lead.
The Otters would go on to win by that final of 6-2 as Kyano Cummings came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to end the game.
Patrick McGuff picked up his league-leading third win of the campaign. McGuff tossed eight innings, allowing two runs-two earned-off two hits and three walks while striking out seven. McGuff’s ERA for the season is now at 0.86.
Jaramy Jacobs is the losing pitcher for Windy City. Jacobs worked just four innings, allowing three runs-all earned-on five hits while punching out four.
The Otters will next travel to Traverse City for a three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET/6:05 p.m. CT.
All three games of the series in Traverse City will be broadcast on WUEV 91.5 FM with Sam Jellinek (play-by-play) on the call.
The Otters will return home for a three-game series May 30-31 against the Florence Freedom. Wednesday, May 30 will be a doubleheader, starting at 5:05 p.m. and is
Deaconess Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility Night. The series finale on May 31 starts at 6:35 p.m. and will be the first Thirsty Thursday of the season with special price drafts.
