(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) – The first place Evansville Otters (6-3) rallied in the ninth to force extra innings and defeated the Frontier Greys 5-4 in 12 innings on a solo home run from infielder Shayne Houck.

Houck hit a 1-1 pitch from Jared Leverett to deep center field for the game winner. It was the first home run for Houck this season and handed Evansville a series win against the Frontier Greys. The series win for the Otters is their third straight in as many chances this season.

Evansville starting pitcher Robert Ramer struck out a career high 10 batters in a career best 7.0 innings. Closer Orlando Santos (1-1) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings at the end of the game for the victory

The Greys took the early lead with a first inning, two run home run from Chris Ellison.

Down 2-0, Evansville answered back for three runs in the fourth. Catcher Kolin Conner hit a sacrifice fly, outfielder John Schultz plated another run on a fielder’s choice and first baseman Nick Schwaner gave the Otters a 3-2 lead on his single to left field. It almost scored two runs but Schultz was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The hit was the 200th for Schwaner in his Otters career. In the 20 year existence of the Evansville Otters, he is only the 7th player in franchise history to amass 200 hits.

Ramer kept the 3-2 advantage until the seventh when infielder Greg Bachman hit a two run home run to give the Greys the one run edge.

The Otters trailed 4-3 until the bottom of the ninth. Schwaner legged out a fielder’s choice, that would have ended the game, and a throwing error on the same play brought home the tying run. Evansville loaded the bases later in the inning but J.R. Higley struck out swinging as the game went to extra innings.

Santos kept it a tie until the bottom of the 12th when Houck won it with a homer.

Evansville is off on Monday and begins a six game roadtrip on Tuesday at the Normal CornBelters. The Otters will have right-hander Preson Olson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) matched up against CornBelters righty Michael Schweiss. First pitch is set for 7:00 pm CT at the Corn Crib in Normal, Illinois. Fans can listen to the Otters broadcast on WUEV 91.5 FM beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 pm CT.
