OTTERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER VS. NORMAL

Otters went 1-1 in the doubleheader on Thursday.

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) – The Evansville Otters  (10-7) split a doubleheader against the Normal CornBelters (5-12) on Thursday night with an 11-7 win in the first game and a 2-1 defeat in the final game of the day.

Evansville trailed 3-1 early in game one until a seven run bottom of the second inning propelled them to a win. The Otters sent 13 players to the plate in the inning as they turned a deficit into a 8-3 lead. The inning started with a throwing error from shortstop Brian Bistagne. After a strikeout, Evansville had the next five batters reach on a total of four walks and a hit by pitch. Infielder Shayne Houck scored two runs on a single, first baseman Nik Balog plated another run with a base hit, and catcher David Cruz completed the rally with another RBI single.

Pitcher Chad James (1-1) threw 5.1 innings and struck out a season best nine hitters in the game one victory.

The Otters took an 11-4 lead to the top of the seventh and withstood a late CornBelters rally for the four run win.

Eight Evansville batters recorded at least one hit each. Allen, Jeremy Nowak and David Cruz each finished with two runs each.

The Otters took a 1-0 lead in game two with an RBI double from outfielder Chris Sweeney in the second inning.

Held scoreless through the first four innings, Normal tied and took the lead in the fifth. A Richard Lucas single evened the score up and the CornBelters took advantage of an error later in the inning for the go-ahead RBI single from Brian Bistagne.

Evansville travels to Lake Erie on Friday to begin a three game series with the Crushers.

The Otters have right-hander Terance Marin (2-0, 1.91 ERA) pitching in the series opener. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm EDT at All Pro Freight Stadium. Fans not attending the game, can listen to the Otters broadcast on WUEV 91.5 FM beginning at 5:45 pm CDT.
