Otters Fall Short against River City 3-2

RHP Connor Little (pictured) threw 2.2 innings of one hit baseball in the defeat.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –The Evansville Otters (48-47) suffered a setback in a 3-2 loss to the River City Rascals (55-40) on Saturday night. Evansville enters the final day of the season on Sunday needing a victory and some help in order to make the Frontier League playoffs.

River City went ahead early with a three-run third inning.

Down 3-0, Evansville drew closer in the fourth inning with run producing singles from catcher Dane Phillips and outfielder Chris Elder. With two men on base, infielder Josh Allen had an opportunity to tie the game but a strikeout ended the inning.

Ahead 3-2, River City rallied to put two men on with one out in the sixth. Pitcher Connor Little relieved starter Tyler Vail and retired the last two batters to keep the deficit 3-2. Little also worked around a bases loaded jam in the seventh to keep the Otters down by one.

Up by a run, the Rascals relievers threw the final 4.0 scoreless innings, retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters for the victory.

Pitcher Dane Stone (9-5) earns the win for River City, yielding two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings pitched. Vail (9-5) takes the loss, going 5.1 innings while allowing three runs. Victor Beriguete (6th save) recorded the final three outs to complete the game.

The Otters totaled just four hits in the contest. Outfielder John Schultz finished the night 0-for-2 with a run scored, ending his nine game hitting streak.

Entering the final day of the regular season, Evansville is one game back of Florence and Rockford (49-46) who hold the final two Frontier League playoff spots. The Otters need a win on Sunday and losses from both teams to become the fifth playoff seed. Evansville can also get into the playoffs as a six seed by winning on Sunday and coupling a Rockford win with a Florence loss. The Otters would remain one game outside of the playoff picture with a loss on Sunday or a combination of a win, a Florence victory and a Rockford loss.

The Otters and Rascals conclude the Frontier League regular season on Sunday, Sept. 6. First pitch at Bosse Field is set for 5:05 p.m. CDT. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the team's front office at 812.435.8686 or online at .
