OTTERS ACQUIRE CALIFORNIA OUTFIELDER

03/02/2010 9:13 AM -
The Evansville Otters have acquired outfielder Diallo Fon from the Edmonton Capitals of the Golden League in exchange for a player to be named later.

Edmonton drafted Fon, 23, last week at the conclusion of the Arizona Winter League, where he hit .292 in 19 games with Team Canada.

Fon was selected by the New York Yankees in the 49th round of the 2005 draft after hitting .344 as a senior at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, Calif.  A four-year letter winner, Fon was ranked as the 51st best pro prospect in the country by Baseball America in 2005.

Instead of joining the Yankees, Fon accepted a scholarship from Vanderbilt University.  He hit .087 in 12 games with the Commodores in 2006 before transferring to the University of Arizona.  As a sophomore in 2007, Fon hit .300 in 48 games with two home runs and 13 RBIs for the Wildcats.  He hit .287 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 53 games for Arizona in 2008.  Fon played in only three games for the Wildcats in 2009.
