By: Mike Radomski
(EVANSVILLE, IN) –
The Evansville Otters opened the season on Friday night and lost to the Normal CornBelters 7-0 at Bosse Field.
The season opening matchup was highlighted by a fine pitching performance from Normal starter Tyler Lavigne. The right-hander from Las Vegas, Nevada threw six shutout innings in his debut, limiting the Otters to just four hits in the CornBelters win.
Jason Roenicke started on the mound for Evansville and yielded a first inning run on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Phil Laurent.
The CornBelters rallied right back in the top of the second inning when the team tallied three more runs. The first four batters reached base in the inning including an RBI single from catcher Andrew Barbaro and a two-run single from infielder Eric Brown.
Daniel Cox added a three-run home run later in the game as Normal won their first game in the Frontier League.
Lavigne earns his first win of the season, striking out three batters in six scoreless innings. Jason Roenicke took the loss after allowing seven runs in five innings.
The Otters bullpen pitched four shutout innings including two from Chris Peters who struck out three batters without allowing a hit. Jared Simon followed that with two hitless innings as well.
Both teams will play again tomorrow night at Bosse Field in the second game of a three game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CST with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:20 PM on WUEV 95.1 FM.
