The Florence Freedom narrowly held on to defeat the Evansville Otters 4-2 at Historic Bosse Field on Thursday night.
Florence took the early lead on a first inning RBI double from Willie Holmes and a second inning sacrifice fly from Kevin Haas. Both players would contibute to more scoring later in the game as well. Holmes hit a solo home run in the 7th and Haas hit another sacrifice fly as the Freedom jumped ahead 4-0.
Evansville was held hitless by pitcher Andy Clark until the 6th inning and scoreless until the ninth inning when designated hitter Phil Britton brought home two runs on a single.
Only leading 4-2, Florence turned to closer Brandon Mathes with the tying run at the plate in the ninth. Mathes struck out Evansville's Troy Frazier to end the game, win the series, and tie the 12 matchups this season against each other.
Florence is now 37-50 with the victory as Evansville is currently 32-55.
Andy Clark (10-4) is the winning pitcher after pitching 8 2/3 innings and allowing two runs. He took a one-hitter into the final inning while bidding for a complete game shutout. The loss goes to Evansville right-hander Joey Satriano (3-1). The rookie made his first professional start, pitching five innings and giving up two runs. Brandon Mathes also earned his fifth save in the win.
Evansville will now travel on the road to begin a three-game weekend series at the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
