Starting pitcher Matt Zielinski threw 7 2/3 shutout innings and the Evansville Otters scored their only run on a fielder's choice in a 1-0 win over the Normal CornBelters on Tuesday night.
The left-handed throwing Zielinski struck out a season-high eight batters in the victory, the first 1-0 win for Evansville this season.
The Otters led off the second inning with back to back singles and outfielder Jose Hernandez scored the only run on a groundball up the middle from 1B Steve Caseres.
Zielinski held the lead the rest of the night inducing an inning-ending double play in the third and picking off outfielder Alvaro Ramirez to end the sixth.
The rookie pitcher allowed just two hits entering the eighth inning where a pair of runners reached on singles. Manager Andy McCauley turned the ball over to reliever Patrick Crider, who got Ramirez to fly out and end the threat.
Leading 1-0, closer Eric Massingham pitched a scoreless ninth inning as Evansville won the first game of the homestand by a run.
Zielinski (2-2) earns the win, as righty Matthew Mossey (1-5) takes the loss, after allowing one run over seven innings. Massingham now extends his Evansvillle Otters single season record of saves to 22 in the win.
